Instead, they’ll just be another consistent performer with the rest of their competition… at least until schedules are shifted again come May. For the rest of the season, two giants are going to do battle week after week, but when the smoke clears, it’s very possible neither will be a giant anymore.
#THE BLACKLIST RATINGS SEASON 3 FREE#
In the age of DVR, no one has to choose anymore, and that means it’s a free for all. We’ve spent so much time wondering who would win in the war between The Blacklist and Scandal that we never considered the possibility of no one winning at all. The Blacklist will mostly score 2.0-2.5 with men, Scandal will mostly score a 2.0-2.5 with women and Backstrom will score a 1.5-2.0 with mostly the one’s that choose to watch the other two in time-shifted viewings. If every 9pm Thursday drama scores a 2.0-2.5 because the audience is being forced to make a Sophie’s choice, then there will be no losers or winners in the slot, there will only be consistent performers. This doesn’t necessarily mean it would track higher than it already does, but it would mean success would be relative. If the demo were to split as we move further and further away from "event" episodes, like mid-season premieres, and go down for both shows equally, it would essentially level the playing field for Hart Hanson’s Backstrom (which only managed to take in a 1.0 in demo against The Blacklist's return) on Fox to compete among giants. What this means is, especially in the female demographic, there’s a potential for the audience to split between the two shows – which, if anything, could benefit the rivals of both ABC and NBC more than help either network individually.

Among men 18-49, The Blacklist has scored a 4.7 average this season while Scandal has taken in a smaller 2.3 however, in women the scores track as 7.0 for Scandal and 5.4 for The Blacklist. But, where these numbers split in greater detail is among the genders. However, when looking at the current season overall, The Blacklist and Scandal do nearly identical numbers in the unified 18-49 demo (both scoring regular numbers anywhere from 2.5 – 3.5). So, last night's premiere does paint a picture that sees Scandal still maintaining dominance against The Blacklist despite the latter just coming off a Super Bowl episode. In last night's return of the NBC series, The Blacklist scored a 2.3 in demo with 9.9 million viewers overall, and Scandal scored 3.1 in demo with 9.5 million viewers overall.

However, the problem with that notion is, unlike its original Monday slot that featured very little, suitable competition, the Jon Bokenkamp created series now has to contend with its biggest ratings rival in broadcast: Scandal. With The Blacklist, NBC hopes to propel the night, and give audiences a fresh reason to tune in on Thursdays.

In order to free up the 10pm Monday timeslot for State of Affairs and, later this season, The Night Shift, NBC opted this year to move its mega-hit, The Blacklist, to the Thursday line-up where it will hopefully anchor a new programming base that’s been dominated by comedy for the last few years. So, considering that, there’s a real reason to be intrigued by the brewing Thursday night war between TV’s two other most prominent powerhouses, James Spader and Shonda Rhimes. As it stands, there's no like-minded competition running against Empire in its 9pm Wednesday airings, and the only overall competition it has is a sitcom, Modern Family. However, the success of a series rarely boils down to a single element, and while Empire’s cast and story are a big (if not the biggest) reason for its success, something else the series has going for it is its timeslot. The reasons for this have been highly debated over the last few weeks, with many pointing to the series’ African American foundation being a key factor. This week, Empire did the impossible and rose again in viewership, this time to a 4.6 in the 18-49 demo with 11.47 million viewers overall.
